About the Set
On June 14, 1800, Napoleon, recently appointed First Consul, clashed at Marengo with the 31,000-strong army of Austrian general Baron Melas; the French victory, aided by the sacrifice of General Desaix, dramatically affected the political scenario of Napoleonic Europe. The Austrian infantry in this set are depicted with the typical short leather cap bearing the brass front plate with the imperial eagle; some figures wear the 1798 helmet bearing Francis II's initials, as was customary for Frei-Korps or Jager light infantry battalions.
