The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German single-engine fighter aircraft widely used during World War II. First introduced in 1937 it became the backbone of the Luftwaffe renowned for its speed agility and firepower. With its distinctive sleek design the Bf 109 was powered by a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz engine enabling it to reach speeds of over 400 mph. The aircraft was equipped with a variety of weapons including machine guns and a 20mm cannon and could carry bombs in some configurations. It served in multiple roles including as a fighter interceptor and ground attack plane and saw action in nearly every major theater of the war. Over 33000 units were built making it the most produced German aircraft of the conflict and its influence on fighter design lasted well beyond WWII.
