Charlemagne also known as Charles the Great was a medieval ruler who united much of Western Europe during the early Middle Ages. King of the Franks and Lombards he expanded his empire through military conquests and strategic alliances. In 800 AD he was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III reviving the idea of a Western Roman Empire. Charlemagne promoted education standardized administration and supported the Christian Church. His reign sparked the Carolingian Renaissance fostering cultural and intellectual growth. He died in 814 leaving a legacy that shaped European identity and governance for centuries.
