At the Round Tops during the Battle of Gettysburg Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee and James Longstreet attempted to seize the Union army's left flank. Advancing across difficult rocky terrain they faced steep slopes and determined resistance. Units from Alabama Texas and other Southern states pushed uphill under intense fire striving to dislodge Union defenders from Little Round Top and Big Round Top. Despite moments of progress coordination issues and the challenging landscape slowed their assault. Union troops including those led by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain ultimately held their ground. The Confederate attack failed contributing to the broader defeat at Gettysburg and marking a turning point in the war's momentum and outcome.
