About VF-143 and the F-14 Tomcat
Developed by Grumman and introduced in the 1970s, the carrier-based F-14A Tomcat used variable-sweep wings to optimize performance across flight regimes, and its two Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines gave it a top speed over Mach 2.3. Armed with the long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, it served as the U.S. Navy's primary fleet-defense fighter until retirement in the mid-2000s. VF-143, nicknamed the "Pukin' Dogs" after a squadron commander's wife likened its griffin insignia to a "pukin' dog," flew the F-14 from NAS Oceana, Virginia.
