Ranking among the most legendary fighters in history the F-4 Phantom II entered service in late 1960. During its career it set a number of speed and altitude records able to reach a top speed of Mach 2.2. The aircraft was also well-armed carrying up to 18000 pounds of weaponry. It was used extensively during the Vietnam War where five F-4 crew members (pilots WSOs and RIOs) attained ace status. Beginning in the 1980s it was gradually replaced by more modern aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle. The warplane has also seen extensive service internationally
