The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a powerful American carrier-based fighter aircraft used extensively during World War II. Designed by Grumman the Hellcat entered service in 1943 and quickly became one of the most successful naval fighters of the war. Built to counter Japan's Mitsubishi A6M Zero it combined rugged construction heavy firepower and excellent pilot protection with impressive speed and maneuverability. Armed with six .50 caliber machine guns the aircraft excelled in both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions. Hellcats were responsible for destroying thousands of enemy aircraft and played a major role in securing Allied air superiority across the Pacific Theater especially during major carrier battles and island campaigns.
