About the F-86 Sabre
The F-86 Sabre was the United States' first swept-wing jet fighter, developed in the late 1940s and flown in some of the earliest jet-versus-jet dogfights in history against Soviet-built MiGs over Korea. Although surpassed by newer designs by the end of the 1950s, the Sabre remained in front-line service with numerous air forces, including the Peruvian Air Force into the 1990s. Close to 8,000 were built between 1949 and 1956 in the United States, Japan and Italy, including 738 carrier-modified versions for the US Navy, with additional variants produced in Canada and Australia. This monograph draws on primary sources including the US Air Force Historical Records Agency, US National Archives, Boeing archives and the UK Public Record Office.
