About the Stielhandgranate

Known to Allied troops as the "potato masher," the Stielhandgranate was a German stick grenade with a long wooden handle, a pull-cord arming system, and a cylindrical warhead carrying about 170 grams of TNT. Its handle gave it extra leverage when thrown and a smooth shell that produced a concussive effect, in contrast to the fragmentation design of the US Mk 2 "pineapple" grenade. A soldier armed it by pulling a cord that ran through the hollow handle to a friction igniter.
