A harbor tugboat is a small powerful workboat designed to move and assist larger vessels in ports harbors and waterways. Despite its compact size a tugboat has a strong engine and specialized propellers that give it tremendous pulling and pushing power. Harbor tugs help guide cargo ships tankers ferries and cruise ships safely into docks or out to open water. They can also tow barges reposition vessels and assist ships during emergencies. Many tugboats have a reinforced hull and a large rubber fender around the bow to protect both the tug and other vessels during close contact. Their crews must have excellent knowledge of local waters and ship-handling techniques. Although harbor tugboats are much smaller than the vessels they assist they play an essential role in keeping busy ports operating safely and efficiently.
