The Hawker Hurricane was a British single-seat fighter aircraft that played a crucial role during the early years of World War II. Designed by Hawker Aircraft and entering service in 1937, it was the Royal Air Force's most numerous fighter at the outbreak of the war. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Hurricane combined sturdy construction, reliable performance, and heavy armament. It became especially famous during the Battle of Britain, where it accounted for more enemy aircraft destroyed than all other British defenses combined. Easier to produce and repair than the Supermarine Spitfire, the Hurricane served in numerous roles, including fighter-bomber and ground-attack missions.
