About the Campaign
From July to September 1942, Japanese forces landed at Buna and advanced toward Port Moresby along the Kokoda Trail, opposed first by Australian militia and later by Australian veterans of the North African campaign. A Japanese thrust toward Milne Bay was defeated in September, and by November the Japanese had been pushed back to their starting point, where American and Australian troops besieged and eliminated the Japanese beachhead at Buna over the following two months.
