About the Nagato Class
Written by naval researcher Stefan Draminski, the book covers Nagato and Mutsu, which entered service in the 1920s as the first battleships in the world to mount 16-inch guns. Both ships were heavily modernized before the Pacific War; Nagato served as Admiral Yamamoto's flagship for the Pearl Harbor attack and was present with Mutsu at the Battle of Midway. Mutsu was lost to a magazine explosion in 1943, while Nagato fought at the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf before being moored at Yokosuka as an anti-aircraft battery. The last Japanese battleship afloat at the end of the war, Nagato was sunk during the 1946 Operation Crossroads nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll.
