About the Book
New York City was a center of business, manufacturing and war spirit for the North during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln addressed a national audience at the Cooper Institute in February 1860, tens of thousands of young men enlisted and marched off to fight, and Frederick Douglass and other Black leaders mobilized African American support for the Union. The city was also deeply divided, and in July 1863 it was the site of the deadliest urban racial violence in American history. This book traces New York's role at the center of the Union war effort on both the battlefield and the home front.
