In the 1970s the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) operated the RF-4E Phantom II a reconnaissance version of the F-4 Phantom II. Equipped with advanced cameras and sensors the RF-4E was used for high-altitude and low-level aerial reconnaissance missions gathering vital intelligence for military operations. The aircraft could fly at high speeds and carry a range of imaging equipment including infrared and radar sensors. Its versatility and effectiveness made it a key asset for the IIAF during the period providing critical surveillance over the Middle East. The RF-4E continued to serve in Iranian service long after the 1979 revolution.
