The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) was a German assault gun used during World War II initially developed to support infantry operations. Introduced in 1939 it was based on the Panzer III chassis and equipped with a 75mm Sturmkanone (StuK 37 or 40) gun effective against both infantry and armored targets. The StuG III played a key role in German forces' success during early campaigns especially in tank destroyer roles. Its low profile speed and firepower made it highly versatile. By the end of the war it became the most produced German armored vehicle with over 10000 units built.
