About Franz Joseph I
Franz Joseph I became Emperor of Austria at age 18 and reigned until his death in 1916, making him the longest-reigning monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His reign spanned wars, revolts and family tragedies, including the 1898 assassination of his wife, Empress Elisabeth, and the 1914 assassination of his nephew and heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which triggered the outbreak of World War I.
