About Belleau Wood
Facing a German advance near the Marne River in June 1918, U.S. Marines were ordered to hold their ground and launched repeated assaults through dense forest and entrenched positions to retake Belleau Wood. Marine Corps lore holds that German troops dubbed them "Teufel Hunden," or "Devil Dogs," during the fighting, though historians note the phrase appeared in American press reports even before the battle and its precise origin is disputed. The battle remains a defining moment in Marine Corps history.
