Known affectionately as the "Big E," the USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the U.S. Navy's sixth aircraft carrier — commissioned in May of 1938. Her combat record in World War II was unmatched, with no ship participating in more major actions against Japan. She served during the Pearl Harbor attack and at Midway, Eastern Solomon, Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal, Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf. She was the most decorated U.S. ship during the war, earning 20 battle stars. The Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947.
