The Bendix Talos was a long-range ramjet-powered surface-to-air missile developed by the U.S. Navy in the 1950s to defend against high-altitude bombers. Deployed aboard cruisers it combined a solid-fuel booster for launch with a ramjet sustainer for high-speed flight reaching speeds over Mach 2.5 and ranges up to 130 miles. The Talos used semi-active radar homing and could carry either a conventional or nuclear warhead. As one of the first guided missile systems in naval service it marked a major advancement in fleet air defense. Talos remained in service until the late 1970s paving the way for modern missile technologies.
