About Dolley Madison
Dolley Madison hosted Washington social functions that brought members of opposing political parties together, helping to establish a tradition of bipartisan socializing distinct from the era's frequent political hostilities. When the British burned the White House in 1814, she was credited with saving Gilbert Stuart's 1796 portrait of George Washington, and her role in shaping the presidential spouse's public profile is often cited as the origin of the unofficial title "First Lady."
