About the Siege of Bastogne
On December 16, 1944, Germany launched the "Wacht am Rhein" offensive through the Ardennes forest, and the road junction of Bastogne became a key objective. German forces encircled the town, isolating American troops -- most notably the 101st Airborne Division -- who withstood repeated assaults under harsh winter conditions until the siege was lifted on December 26 by a counteroffensive from General George S. Patton's U.S. Third Army.
