About the Teutonic Knights
This military and monastic order appeared in the Holy Land at the time of the Third Crusade before focusing its activity on the colonization of Eastern Prussia, Poland, and the Baltic countries. In 1199, Pope Innocent III granted them the white surcoat with a black cross that became the order's insignia. In 1242, the knights were defeated at the Battle of Lake Peipus by Alexander Nevsky, prince of Novgorod.
