The Village Peddler 1790-1820 is depicted as a traveling salesman typical of late Georgian Britain. Dressed in a black tailcoat red waistcoat knee breeches white stockings and a tall top hat he presents a respectable appearance meant to inspire trust among rural customers. Suspended from straps around his shoulders a wooden tray displays an assortment of small household goods and curiosities: tinware gloves books trinkets and a small framed print. A doll hangs prominently at the front likely intended to attract children and mothers alike. Standing on a cobbled base he appears poised mid-sale one hand gesturing as if describing his wares. Such peddlers traveled from village to village supplying everyday necessities and modest luxuries to communities distant from established shops and markets.
