Over half of Britain's capital ship losses in World War II came at the hands of U-boats. Aircraft carrier HMS Courageous was sunk by U-29 on 17 September 1939; U-47 penetrated the Scapa Flow defenses to sink battleship HMS Royal Oak on 14 October 1939; U-81 sank carrier HMS Ark Royal off Gibraltar on 14 November 1941; U-331 sank battleship HMS Barham off Egypt on 25 November 1941; and U-73 sank carrier HMS Eagle en route to Malta on 11 August 1942. Lardas charts the development of these U-boat campaigns alongside the Royal Navy's countermeasures, including several near-misses in which capital ships evaded U-boat attacks.
