About Berdan's Sharpshooters
Raised in 1861 and commanded by Colonel Hiram Berdan, the 1st United States Sharpshooters recruited men who could pass rigorous marksmanship tests, and wore distinctive green uniforms rather than standard Union blue. Equipped first with target rifles and later the Sharps breech-loading rifle, they specialized in skirmishing, reconnaissance and precision fire against Confederate officers and artillery crews, seeing action in campaigns including the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam and Gettysburg.
