About Berdan's Sharpshooters
Organized in 1861 by Colonel Hiram Berdan, the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters recruited marksmen who had to pass rigorous accuracy tests and wore distinctive dark green uniforms for concealment rather than the standard Union blue. Armed primarily with Sharps breech-loading rifles, they served in skirmishing, reconnaissance and long-range sharpshooting roles at battles including Gettysburg.
