About Berdan's Sharpshooters
Organized in 1861 by Colonel Hiram Berdan, the regiment recruited marksmen who had to pass an accuracy test to qualify. Unlike standard infantry, they wore distinctive dark green uniforms for concealment and were armed with the Sharps breech-loading rifle, which allowed a faster rate of fire than standard muzzleloaders. Operating ahead of the main lines on skirmishing and reconnaissance duty, Berdan's Sharpshooters saw action at the Siege of Yorktown and at Gettysburg.
