About the Oneida at Saratoga
Records show that General Horatio Gates issued the Oneida allied with his forces red woolen caps to distinguish them from Native warriors fighting alongside the British, and some, including members of the Stockbridge Tribe, were also given new Charleville muskets, shot bags and powder horns. At the Battle of Oriskany, the small contingent of Oneida warriors fighting with the Patriots distinguished themselves in the ambush of General Nicholas Herkimer's relief column near Fort Stanwix, New York, one of the bloodiest engagements of the American Revolution.
